Enter the gateway of the sanctuary and feel the excitement build as rugged nature unfurls before you with every jerk of the dusty 4 wheel drive. Observations have revealed that Sri Lankan leopards may be more social than subspecies elsewhere and are known to tackle bigger prey than themselves, including all most full-grown buffaloes. Our leopards help to determine the densities and numbers of prey species such as spotted/axis deer, barking deer, wild boar and sambar. This is a unique and distinctive position to be in as the larger lions and tigers usually supersede leopards, in other areas of the world, but in Sri Lanka., leopards are at top of the food chain.
Your best chance to see a leopard is generally first thing in the morning and then again at dusk. The male leopards in Yala tend to be confident animals and are often seen walking the tracks during the day. Young males in particular seem to have no fear of jeeps, which can lead to some excellent photographic opportunities. Whether you are a wildlife photography enthusiast, or whether observing animals in their natural habitat has made it on to your bucket list, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to marvel at the sight of one of nature’s most breathtaking animals. Many travelers associate Sri Lanka with pristine beaches and the resplendent Asian elephants, but the jewel of our crown is fast becoming the treasured leopard as locals become more dedicated to preserving this glorious animal.

Day 07
Morning and afternoon safaris at Yala National Park in search of Leopard, Sloth Bear and Asian Elephant. The biggest draws in Yala are Leopards, Elephants and Sloth Bears. A recent study has shown that Yala has one of the highest densities of Leopards in the world. The lack of other large carnivores means that the leopard is the top predator and adults and cubs are remarkably relaxed during the day, offering great opportunities for viewing and photography. Yala is also the best place in Asia for sighting the shy and usually nocturnal Sloth Bear. Yala is also home to over 250 Asian Elephant with the highlight being the 10-12 large Tuskers that roam around the park. The park is also good for dry zone specialties like Indian and Great Thick-knees, Sirkeer and Blue-faced Malkohas and Malabar Pied Hornbill. A day’s birding in the park, during the northern winter, can yield a 100 species.
