Kumana and Gal Oya
“The Crossing” is the sister event of “The Gathering” in Minneriya National Park. It signifies the great mammoth elephants swimming from one island to the other in search of food – hence the name “The Crossing”. It is a lifetime experience where you get to witness swimming elephants, mere several feet away from your boat. This type of nature’s phenomenon must be witnessed from a distance since the elephants are very vulnerable in the water while the swim or “Cross”. The best time to witness “The Crossing” would be during the months of June, July & August when the water level is down & it’s very hard to find water in the nearby forest – Nilgala (which is believed to be the Medicinal Forest of King Budhdhadasa).
