Day 05
After breakfast visit the tea plantation and also a tea factory visit Once in the tea factory, you would generally start out in the plantation itself to learn about how tea is cultivated, then visit the factory where ancient machines pre-dating the industrial revolution wither, roll and dry the tea. There is normally a little time at the end of the tour for a tea tasting, either of one specific type of tea or occasionally of the various specialties of that particular factory. Much like a wine tasting, a traditional tea tasting would involve drinking tea (without milk), swilling it around the mouth to get the taste, and then spitting it out into a spittoon. A few tea factories stick to these traditional methods, although the spittoon method is not so popular these days! It’s definitely worth your time to pay a visit, even if only to get a chance to see the antique machines at work. Enjoy a cup of tea, with a chance to purchase various types of tea too.
Afterwards, leave to Wellawaya.

Day 08
After breakfast leave to Udawalawe.
Once reached Udawalawe visit the Elephant Transit Home which takes care of orphaned elephant calves – until they are independent and able enough to be released back to the wild. The Transit Home is a lively place. Feeding milk to the calves every three hours is a recurring job on all 365 days of the year. Elephant calves at ETH are fed once every three hours. ETH turns into frenzy if the feeding times are delayed; the pathetic cry and the charges of elephants for milk is agonizing to hear. Getting the orphaned elephant calves adapted to milk powder and a whole new environment requires utmost patience and care, as there is still no special milk formulae that has been introduced for elephants.
In general the calves are fed human baby milk formulae. After the initial milk feeding sessions of finding out the best milk formulae for elephant calves – to suit them individually, the elephants are at a higher risk of falling sick with digestive problems or milk intolerance. In those instances special preparations like soya milk, rice broth or jeevanee (a rehydration solution) are provided in place of milk to bring them back to normalcy.
Also visit the Buffalo curd manufacturing process in the nearby village Breakfast, lunch, or dinner; elevenses, afternoon snack, or dessert; buffalo curd always hits the spot. But despite buffalo curd being a quintessential favourite in the Sri Lankan pantry, its arduous journey, from teet to table, is often overlooked.
