Dolphin Beach

Overview

Dolphin Beach was opened by Jonathan and Dallas Martenstyn to offer the discerning visitor a new experience in Sri Lanka. Architect Christine Wallbeoff has set the resort apart with her eclectic and distinctive fusion of eco, rustic and boutique design.

The Martenstyns have brought an original concept to life with this unique initiative on the pristine sands near Alankuda on the Kalpitiya peninsula, an isolated part of the west coast of Sri Lanka. As Directors of D.V.Martenstyn Ltd, the family business established in 1953, they launched the first of its leisure businesses under the brand name “Makara”. In addition to its other business activities, the company manufactures a range of products including, boats, canoes, kayaks, life jackets and outboard motors under the Makara brand.

The resort is named fittingly after a mythical creature traditionally identified with water – the source of all existence and fertility and emblematic of the surroundings of the resort. The makara is often seen standing guard at entrances to temples as it was thought to ward off undesirable spirits.
