Whale Watching Tours in Trincomalee
Alongside Mirissa in the south, Trincomalee in North-east Sri Lanka is regarded as one of the best places in the world to watch Blue Whales. Wild Life
Along with Mirrisa in the South, Trincomalee is also regarded as one of the world’s top locations for watching Blue Whales. Sightings of these magnificent oceanic giants are prevalent from February until August. Strike rates for Whale sightings appear to be at around 90% during the months of February till April when numbers peak. From May – August too, whale sightings occur at a strike rate of around 80%, extending Sri Lanka’s whale watching window for a period nine months. Trincomalee is also the only place in the world where Blue Whales can be seen from land, where on occassions, views of the whales passing the submarine canyon can be obtained from a vantage point from Swami rock. Sperm Whales may also be encountered particularly heading towards April and pods of Spinner Dolphins are also regularly seen throughout the year.
Asian Elephant may also be encountered in the late afternoons on the Habarana-Trincomalee Road.
